Abstract
The Differential Adhesion Hypothesis was proposed by Steinberg (1963) as the basis for cell sorting during morphogenesis. Glazier and Graner (1992) developed models that explored the cellular mechanisms underlying cell sorting events. This module walks through creating a modeling experiment that explores the relationships between cell surface adhesion, random surface fluctuations and cell sorting.
Physiology
Cell Adhesion, membrane ruffling/fluctuations
Model description
The model tests the hypothesis that differential adhesion is responsible or sufficient for cell sorting. The experiments associated with this model made use of neural and pigmented cells isolated from chick embryo retina. These cells have distinguishable adhesion properties and when mixed will sort themselves into two separate populations. The model takes into account cells having different degrees of "stickiness", cell shapes, surface fluctuations and random exploration of local environments. The model is described in physical terms of energy costs, local and global minima, and boltzman state transitions.
